Zanzibar Holidays

Immerse yourself in Zanzibar

From the markets in Zanzibar to the vibrant local culture & cuisine, shop for souvenirs such as spices, textiles, and jewellery and immerse yourself in a far away paradise. Whether you are seeking a tranquil getaway or an adventure-filled holiday, Zanzibar is the perfect destination to explore and discover places of interest for all travellers.

Zanzibar is the ultimate Indian Ocean experience, with its fascinating history, incredible nature, enchanting sunset and magnificent beaches, altogether embraced by the scent of exotic spices. If you are looking for a peaceful yet active escape, Zanzibar is the perfect place to give rein to your holiday wanderlust.

The position of Zanzibar, which is washed by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, made this archipelago a favourable base for traders voyaging between Africa, Arabia, and India. These three cultures shaped Zanzibar’s history, traditions, food and language.

Zanzibar is famous for its tropical island charms, white beaches, crystal clear sea, and spices.

Zanzibar has many beautiful and luxurious resorts, where you can spend an idyllic holiday.

What is the local language?

The official local language is Swahili. English is often spoken in the tourist areas, as well as Italian, French and Arabic.

The island holds some intriguing history. For example, did you know that one of the shortest wars in history took place on Zanzibar?  It lasted only 38 minutes.

Or did you know that Zanzibar was the first African region with color television?

Or  that Freddie Mercury - The famous lead singer of Queen was born in the oriental maze of narrow, curved lanes known as Stone Town.

Or, Imagine eggs for breakfast which have white yolks. Can you believe it? But don’t worry, there’s nothing wrong with them and they don’t even taste differently.  Chickens are fed with a grain that makes them produce monochrome eggs and this makes their yolks white.

Or, you can safari, but without Lions and Elephants - Zanzibar is a part of Africa and Tanzania, which is known for its wildlife and safaris, but there are no lions, elephants, or giraffes in Zanzibar.  Safaris in Zanzibar happen under water instead. In the Indian Ocean, you can find breath-taking views of ocean life and coral reefs.

If you want to visit an on-land safari you can book trips with short flights to Africa and Tanzania as an exciting excursion adventure. The love of Africa and its landscapes and wildlife gives opportunities for tailor-made itineraries that oer the most unforgettable experiences. An exclusive flying experience, that combines luxury with the convenience of flying privately. These trips are designed to give amazing experiences that offer tantalising views of the African wildlife in the utmost comfort, transporting you into a world of quietude, being a silent spectator.

What else can i do in Zanzibar?

Above The Clouds - Luxury Escapes can book you memorable trips and excursions. Here is a sample of what you can see and do;

Sunset Dhow Cruise

A dhow is a traditional sailing vessel with lateen sails and one or more masts. It is used mostly in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean regions.

A sunset dhow cruise is a truly romantic African experience, combining all of the senses; you will see the beautiful Zanzibari scenery, listen to evocative taarab music, and enjoy the taste of the island’s typical cuisine – all whilst enjoying the views of the breathtaking sunset.

One travel tip is to go on one of the luxurious dhow cruises for a private sunset dinner cruise or a snorkelling day trip for honeymoon couples or families.

Deep-Sea Fishing

The abundant diversity that East Africa has to offer makes Zanzibar and the surrounding Indian Ocean Islands perfect for both the seasoned and novice fishermen.

Whether you are fishing on your own or with a group, Fishing Zanzibar is able to tailor a fishing charter specifically to your own requirements. The company’s fully rigged big game fishing boats and yachts are fitted with top-of-the-range trolling gear by Shimano, but, as another travel tip for you – if you want to bring along your own gear, that is absolutely fine.

Nungwi Mnarani Aquarium

The Nungwi Mnarani Aquarium is a sea turtle conservation project.

Mnarani, meaning, 'place of the lighthouse‘ in Swahili, is located at the northern tip of Zanzibar Island in the small village of Nungwi near the lighthouse that marks this landmark.

This sanctuary is committed to the nurturing and rehabilitation of marine turtles, it unveils the delicate marine ecosystem through its conservation pond and natural aquarium.

The turtle conservation pond is a natural lagoon separated from the Indian Ocean by a few meters of old reef rocks, but the tide within the lagoon is a clear indication that the connection with the ocean is open. A wooden pier was built on one half of the lagoon, allowing a better access to the Sea Turtles, offering a second information pavilion as well as a small interaction platform.

The centre also offers several smaller pools to keep the baby and juvenile sea turtles, to treat injured or sick turtles, as well as some other large vivariums to keep other indigenous wildlife.

Every February, an annual release party is held when injured turtles that have been rehabilitated are released back into the ocean.

Accommodation

Zanzibar offers a wide range of holiday accommodations, from 5 Star Hotels, like Zuri Zanzibar, to charming luxurious villas, more budget friendly hotels and all-inclusive resorts such as Hotel RIU Jambo and Royal Zanzibar.
